| History |
The 1990 Governor's Cup Fun Run, 3.09 miles on Saturday 14 July, from the Alaska State Capitol to the base of Hospital Drive. 271 runners and rollerbladers to a mass start at the Capitol. Course: out Calhoun Avenue for a quick glimpse of the downtown sights, climbing through the Highlands, then a steadier, more level pace along Glacier Avenue to the finish. Winners. Overall: Rick Thibodeau of Juneau 15:33, six seconds ahead of his brother Guy, cross country coach at the University of Alaska Anchorage. A third brother, Ray, was ninth in Men 20-29. Third across the line: Scott McNeil 16:25. First woman: Shelly James 19:01. Second: Dawn Rider 20:53 - the Empire put the gap between them at 52 seconds, where the times it printed differ by 1:52. Rollerblades: Scott Fischer first across the line in 12:00, Nona Head the first woman in 15:40. Rider, on the course: "The first mile is all hills, it's really hard. The race is so short you just have to gut it out. It's not my favorite race, but I felt I finished real strong anyway. I did really well this time." She added that she prefers 10Ks. The field was not all racers: the Empire counted more than a handful of strollers, walkers, joggers and two race walkers. Start: organizer John McConnochie divided the field by predicted finish time and staggered the start with marker lines painted on the pavement, after years in which the size of the field had people tripping at the start. Rider: "All of the runners felt it was a really well-run race. A lot of people were impressed with how smoothly the start went." Forty three volunteers took part. Award: Shelly James and Rick Thibodeau received the Governor's Cup at the finish line, each to hold it for six months. Rod Swope, Commissioner of Natural Resources, represented the governor; the Empire printed the name as "Steve Cooper", and Alaska's governor in 1990 was Steve Cowper. Held here: 269 of the 271. The divisions add to exactly the headline figure. Two finishers cannot be made into runners: the 27th woman in the 30-39 division, in 33:15, is printed as "Smith (first name unavailable)", and the eighth man in the 14-19 division, in 25:55, as "no name available". Further rows: Phillip Florendo in Men 20-29 and George Partlow in Men 40-49 are printed with no time and are held with a zero time and a note. Tom Waldo's 18:19 is printed at eighth in Men 30-39, ahead of a ninth place of 18:12; both are stored as printed. The list gives the surname of Brett and Mark Neyhart as "Weyhart", and each row carries a note. Rollerbladers are recorded as a race of their own rather than a division of the run, with no distance: no source gives the length of their course and the 1988 clipping says it differed from the runners'. Sources: "Governor's Cup race draws 271", Juneau Empire, Monday 16 July 1990, page 9, continuing on page 10; and the finish list on page 10, headed "1990 Governor's Cup Fun Run / July 14. 3.09 miles. Time in minutes, seconds." |
